TIAAN CAMPHER

Head Coach

Tiaan competed in numerous team & individual sports as a younger athlete. Currently he enjoys an active lifestyle by doing a combination of outdoor-activities and Crossfit. He has completed a number of open water swims, half marathons, trail runs and mountain bike races.

His passion for sport has lead him to study a degree in Human Movement Science as well as a post graduate honors degree in Biokinetics.

During his eight years as a Biokineticist at the Sport Science Institute of South Africa he has gained a vast amount of experience and developed a special interest in Injury Rehabilitation and Strength & Conditioning. Tiaan has lived out his passion for high performance strength & conditioning as the head strength & conditioning coach for UCT’s 1st rugby team for 7 years. In 2010 he moved into the private sector establishing his Biokinetics practice at Bishops Diocesan College where he also is involved in the rehab, strength & conditioning of the boys in various sports.

Tiaan discovered Crossfit in 2011, loved its concepts and have since applied the Crossfit training principles to his programming with great success.  In November 2013 Tiaan opened the doors to CrossFit Impi, and haven’t looked back since.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT CROSSFIT?

Possibly the best thing about Crossfit is the interaction with the Crossfit members that come from all walks of life each with their own level of fitness. Yet when they walk through those doors, they form part of a family that will accept each other for who of are and inspire you to become the best possible version of yourself. The support amongst crossfitters is tremendous and humbling.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A CROSSFIT COACH?

The change you observe in your clients lives is unbelievably rewarding. Clients go from weak to strong, unfit to fit, reluctant to confident. It’s very rewarding to be part of the life changing journey our clients go through and to experience the delight of people when they reach a goal, master a new skill or improve their own records. Every day becomes a celebration!

HOW DO YOU APPLY THE FITNESS YOU HAVE DEVELOPED THROUGH CROSSFIT OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?

I love the feeling of being prepared for almost any activity or challenge I want to participate in, whether it is a trail run or MTB ride in the mountain, and obstacle course, a game of touch with friends or playing with my kids.

You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT CROSSFIT?

For me, it’s the sense of community that I love. For those that don’t take part in CrossFit they see it as a bunch of crazy people shouting and screaming at each other, dropping heavy weights and wearing ridiculous socks, but for those who do CrossFit, it’s a community, it’s somewhere where people don’t judge you, they push you to be better, they help you to be better, somewhere you can bring your problems and let them out on a fellow CrossFitters shoulders or on that hectic WOD (*Work Out of the Day).  No matter how your day is going, the CrossFit community will make you smile, will make you work your best and push you to your limits, no matter what level of fitness you are, no one judges you they only inspire you.  That for me is CrossFit…

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A CROSSFIT COACH?

The banter by far!! Our members are some of the best out there, always keen for a laugh and sometimes a bit too keen to give the coach some stick.  Imagine going to work every day and getting to teach your new members something they’ve never done before or trying to crush your elite athletes because they keep beating your WOD times.  It’s fantastic to laugh every day at work, whether it’s with my colleague’s, with our members or at myself.

HOW DO YOU APPLY THE FITNESS YOU HAVE DEVELOPED THROUGH CROSSFIT OUTSIDE OF THE GYM?

CrossFit has made me prepared for pretty much anything out there…. Except for swimming… that’s not happening.  I can go into so many sporting codes and know that I’ll come out fine, I’ll survive it and most probably do well.  My running has improved dramatically from CrossFit and that’s mainly because I can mentally push myself more than I could before. But most importantly CrossFit has taught me that I can laugh and be competitive at the same time, which was never the case before.

If you can’t laugh at yourself, how can you laugh at others?
